Encounters with Difference is an upcoming conference on travel writing and gender. It is hosted and funded by the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School for Literary Studies, and will be held at the Freie Universität Berlin on 27–28 October 2017.
The conference will be held in the rooms of the Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School, located at Habelschwerdter Allee 45, 14195 Berlin. Enter through the main building entrance there, then immediately turn right, down the first corridor (corridor 33). The Graduate School is located behind the glass door of that corridor.
- Carl Thompson (University of Surrey), “Beyond Gender? Gendering and ungendering early nineteenth-century travel writing.” 10.15 am, Friday 27 Oct.
- Churnjeet Mahn (University of Strathclyde). “Intercourses: Sexuality and dissent in travel writing.” 2.15 pm, Friday 27 Oct.
- Dúnlaith Bird (Université Paris 13). “Brief Encounters.” 9.45 am, Saturday 28 Oct.
A timetable of the whole conference, including an overview of the rooms, can be downloaded here: Encounters-Programme.
The nearest U-Bahn (subway/metro) station is called “Freie Universität”. Exit there, turn left, walk back a short way (along the side of the station) down Brümmerstraße, turn right into Landoltweg and then left into Hittorfstraße (see the map below). At the end of the street you will meet with Habelschwerdter Allee and see the dark brown, 1960s-style university building in front of you. Cross at the lights a short way to your right, and the main entrance doors are a little further to the right, up a couple of steps or a ramp. It’s about 5–7 minutes’ walk from the U-Bahn to the university. Travel times from your hotel can be calculated via the website of the BVG (Berlin transport authority).
There is no registration fee for the conference, and refreshments and a simple lunch will be provided for speakers on both days, however participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation costs. You can find more information on travel and accommodation here.
